Students that met reading goals were invited to attend a morning of bowling at Bemidji Bowl on Tuesday May 15th. Forty-five students from elementary and middle school attended the event.Click to view slideshow.

Congratulations to senior, Mary Goggleeye

Congratulations to Mary Goggleye, a graduating artist-scholar.

She recently won a $1,000 Frances Bartos King-James E. King scholarship from the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation.

She also recently won an art contest for the Lady Slipper Scenic By-way Lady Slipper festival later this summer. Mary’s ladyslipper artwork will be depicted on the festival posters hung throughout the community.

If you see Mary, tell her minochige!

A time for change……

It is May, 2012. This is the month we all know as the end to another school year. Just as the seasons change, so does our lives with the passing of time. Our kindergartners are suddenly 1^st graders! Middle School is transforming into High School! And let’s not forget our seniors of 2012….our graduating class. The change is probably the greatest for them. There are so many plans, so many dreams. What will the future hold for them? Where will it lead them?

What part have you played in the change process of our students? Perhaps you made sure they were here on time. Maybe you took care of them when they were sick. How many hours did you spend helping with homework and answering questions? These are formative years and every little thing you have done has made a difference. Thank you parents, grandparents, guardians, friends, and extended family for all you do and the care you show and provide.

It is also a good time to thank our educators and staff. This is a passionate group of professionals that have not forgotten to put the “care” into teaching. School is so much more than books and tests. Every day is a learining experience for young and old alike. You all have a special gift you have chosen to share with our youth. Thank you for your endless efforts!

Graduation is not the end of the change process. For some it is only the beginning. Previously, I spoke of the dreams of the future our graduates have. I hope we all take a special interest in each of the seniors as they move on. Make sure they are not forgotten and help them transition into their new experiences. Change is difficult. With encouragement and support change can—and should be—a positive movement of renewed hope.

The Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School will also be undergoing some structural changes. Some literal, others in the organization of educational performance and progress. As educational leaders in the community, we only and always have the best interests of our students at heart. There will be a lot of trainings going on over the summer months in preparation for a comprehensive approach to the educational needs of all. We will come back better prepared and focused on the needs of our High School students. We will come back stronger and refreshed to give our Elementary students the foundations they need to bring them to their fullest potential.

Take time to play this summer. Slow down and breathe in some of our pure air, stop and smell nature (I bet you thought I was going to say “roses”, didn’t you!), and basque in the suns warmth. Stay in touch, and see you soon!

9th graders to Grand Rapids…

9^th grade students went on a field trip today to the Future Workers Event in Grand Rapids, which was organized by the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce. It was an opportunity for students to meet with employers who gave a tour of their facility and talked with the students about what kind of qualities an employer looks for when interviewing job candidates.
